Our academy

More styles. More classes. Run by volunteers, for the community.

Unlike most martial arts businesses, Sozokan Academy puts quality, practical, accessible training first, not profit. We are staffed entirely by volunteers. Over more than two decades the academy has grown to offer the largest range of martial arts styles available across Australia, with dedicated classes across four age groups. There are no guaranteed black-belt programs here; gradings are earned on skill and merit, so your rank means something.

Sensei Paul Marston, founder of Sozokan Academy

Sensei Paul Marston, Founder and owner

Paul founded Sozokan Academy in 1997 to share his passion with others. With over 47 years of experience, his journey has covered karate, judo, aikido, jujitsu, BJJ, taijitsu, boxing, traditional weapons, kung fu, South-East Asian arts, arnis and silat, and now the reality-based systems of America and Israel. His specialties are practical combatives, edged-weapons training, and self-defence for women, children and the elderly. He is the only recognised representative of the International KAPAP Federation in Western Australia.
